Lift Summer Sun Damage with IPL

Updated: Jun 28

It is fall again, and the perfect time to address some summer sun damage we may have acquired this past beautiful summer season. It is understandable, we live and play at the beach, and there is no way we are missing out on that. Thankfully, we at Renove Med Spa, can take care of you and your skin and help address some of the skin issues that can occur from sun exposure. The month of October, 2019, we will be featuring the Photofacial treatment, also known as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). https://www.renovemedspa.org/photorejuvination

What Does An IPL Treatment Do?

A photofacial treatment addresses unwanted skin pigment, known as sun spots, age spots, or liver spots, pigment that can occur on the face, neck, chest, hands, and really anywhere there is excessive sun exposure. And now NEW at Renove, we can also address the unwanted hormonal pigmentary changes known as melasma. Melasma is a deeper much more stubborn kind of pigment that is caused by fluctuations in hormone levels that can occur during or after pregnancy, menopause and with birth control pills. Men can also have these pigmentary changes.

What Is A Photofacial Treatment?

A photofocial or IPL treatment is not a laser, it uses light in the visible spectrum, with numerous simultaneous wavelengths from red light to blue light and the wavelengths in between. This light is applied to the area to be treated with brief pulses of light, similar to a camera flash. With our NEW IPL addition, we have the ability to treat much deeper and more stubborn pigment, with less discomfort during and after the treatment. If you've had an IPL treatment with us before, you will be very pleased with the level of comfort with our new IPL wavelength.

What Can I Expect During a Photofacial Treatment?

When you come in for your photofacial treatment, your skin will be gently cleaned to remove any makeup and we will apply a cooling gel to the area to be treated. This gel helps the light from the IPL to penetrate into your skin and to help keep your skin cool during the treatment. Then the IPL handpiece will be directly applied to the skin, and you will see a bright flash of light, like a camera flash, and feel a very brief pulse of heat. This will be repeated about 20 flashes for a full facial treatment, which takes no more than fifteen minutes from start to finish. We will remove the cooling gel and apply a zinc based sunscreen.

What Can I Expect After My IPL Treatment?

Immediately following an IPL treatment, you will feel like you have a sunburn, for about an hour. This sensation will subside after about an hour. The evening after your IPL treatment, the treated areas will be more sensitive to heat, such as hot water, so I recommend cool facial washes and avoid a hot shower that evening to the treated skin only. By the next day, your skin will fee completely normal, and you may resume all prescriptions skin care treatments. What you will see after your IPL treatment is the unwanted pigment begin to darken and come to the surface of your skin. This pigment will be exfoliated naturally by your skin over the course of the next week. It is our goal that you be pigment free by the end of the week, though other body parts, such as the chest, may take longer for all the pigment to come to the surface and naturally exfoliate. You may makeup immediately following an IPL treatment.

How Long Do The Results Last?

Following your IPL treatment, unwanted skin pigment will be completely eliminated. Stubborn melasma may take more than one treatment, especially if you have darker skin tones, as we must use gentler settings when there is more natural pigment in the skin. The change and improvement in overall complexion with removal of abnormal pigment is DRAMATIC! Results of the IPL are long lasting, and would be permanent without any further sun exposure, which of course is impossible, which is why we will recommend DAILY zinc or titanium based sunscreen.

Are There Products I Can Use To Maintain My Results?

Abnormal skin pigment is caused by sun exposure. But we don't want you to avoid sun exposure, just protect your skin with high quality zinc or titanium sunscreens to block the UV rays of the sun that cause this damage. Melasma is also triggered by sun exposure so it will be equally important to protect with sunscreen if you have melasma. Immediately following your IPL treatment, to help quickly eliminate the pigment and prevent a recurrence, I recommend a course of topical application of prescription strength hyroquinone and longer term treatment with prescription tretinoin, brand name Retin-A, a high potency form of vitamin A. There are several other non-hydroquinone products that are also very effective at eliminating and preventing the recurrence of unwanted skin pigment, such as Skin Medica Lytera and ZO Skin Brightening systems.
